Young wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant has been named the captain of the Delhi One-Day team for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy and will replace veteran Gautam Gambhir.
"Frankly Vijay Hazare is the last tournament of the season and this was an ideal opportunity for us to see who is the best candidate to lead the state side. We were not finding anyone all these years who could replace Gautam," said Nikhil Chopra to PTI on the decision.
"The Hazare Trophy gives us opportunity to test Rishabh's captaincy skills and with Gautam and other seniors around, he will get ample guidance from Gautam. Obviously Atul (Wassan) has spoken to Gautam and he has been taken into confidence."
19-year-old Pant recently made his debut for India in the third Twenty 20 International (T20I) against England but has been around in the domestic circuit for only two seasons. He had scored a 48-ball ton against Jharkhand in the 2016-17 season of Ranji Trophy, before impressing everyone by smacking a triple-century against Maharashtra.
