Spin twins Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja removed top-order batsmen as England managed to reach 102 for three at lunch on the first day of the first Test at Rajkot.
England, who won the toss and opted to bat, lost skipper Alastair Cook for 21 and debutant Haseeb Hameed for 31 on either side of the drinks break. Ben Duckett (13) became Ashwin’s second victim as the left-hander was dismissed just at the stroke of lunch.
Left-arm spinner Jadeja gave the hosts the breakthrough at 47 by earning successfully a shout for leg-before wicket against Cook.
In the morning, India could have put England under more pressure but were let down by sloppy fielding in the slip cordon. Ajinkya Rahane put down Cook’s catch off Mohammed Shami at gully, while Murali Vijay dropped a low catch of debutant Hameed off Umesh Yadav.
