India inched closer to victory against Bangladesh in the ongoing one-off Test, as they got big scalps of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim in the first session on the fifth day. Mahmudullah continued to battle from one end as he helped Bangladesh reach 202 for 5 at lunch. At the other end, Sabbir Rahman has looked positive.
The hosts’ spinners were superb while the pacers kept it tight too. The final day began as per plan for Virat Kohli as Shakib was dismissed early. In the 38th over, the southpaw was undone by a Ravindra Jadeja special, as the ball after pitching outside off, spun sharply into Shakib. Surprised with the abnormal turn, the batsman tried to defend it but the ball brushed his gloves and went straight to the fielder at short-leg.
After Shakib’s dismissal, the onus was on skipper Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah to ensure stability in the innings. But the former decided to take some risks and looked to counter-attack the bowlers, but lost his wicket. In the 53rd over, the wicketkeeper-batsman came down the pitch to hit Ravichandran Ashwin over the infield, but only ended up giving a catch to Jadeja at mid-off.
Mushfiqur’s departure brought Sabbir at the crease, and the attacking batsman unexpectedly looked shaky at the start. But soon he broke the shackles and thumped away a full-toss for a six and also hit two boundaries to reach 18 not out.
Mahumudullah, from the other end, kept the fight and reached his half-century. At lunch, Mahmudullah was batting on 58 not out, well complimented by Sabbir on 18.
